Investing.com - Artificial intelligence is in the spotlight once again as the trading week gets underway, as traders fret over a combination of mounting debt loads in AI companies and potentially higher-for-longer interest rates. Against this backdrop, the quarterly earnings season accelerates, with results due out from hyperscaler Meta Platforms, rocket giant SpaceX, electric vehicle maker Tesla, and streaming player Netflix.
The week begins with investors focusing on recent jitters over the AI boom.
Partially fueling these fears was hotter-than-anticipated September inflation data, which increased expectations for higher U.S. interest rates. Worries have subsequently abounded over the sustainability of large-scale debt-driven spending by AI companies on a rapid buildout of AI infrastructure like chips and data centers.
Shares of semiconductor and technology hardware firms have slumped as a result, casting a pall over an AI-driven bull market that has now marched on for four years. Last week, the Philadelphia semiconductor index, a tracker of the sector, retreated by 11.41%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite shed 4.48%.
Data center operator CoreWeave was at the heart of the selloff, with the stock shedding roughly a fourth of its value last week alone. Cloud computing group Oracle also declined by 9.31% for the week, while the cost of insuring against defaults in these companies' bonds soared.
"Clearly the main nervousness last week was around AI-related names, with credit markets starting to show some distress in that sector," analysts at Deutsche Bank said in a note.
2. Meta to kick off hyperscaler earnings
A parade of tech-sector earnings this week could provide more color on the trajectory of runaway AI expenditures.
Highlighting the earnings schedule is Meta Platforms, which will report after the closing bell on Wednesday. Over the last month, the Facebook-owner has taken large strides in the race to harness AI, thanks to a well-received release of its new Muse AI model.
Muse amassed millions of downloads after the product was launched in September, underlining demand for its various services, including help with booking travel and setting up small business tools. Meta has since moved to expand the reach of the technology, releasing an open-weight version of its Muse Spark model for coding.
Meta will be the first of the so-called AI "hyperscalers" to report. These megacap companies have been pushing to quickly develop their AI capabilities, in part by raking in chips and quickly constructing data centers. The spending has helped to underpin the broader AI industry, in the process.
Elsewhere, Elon Musk's SpaceX will report after the market close on Tuesday.
The company, which went public in a blockbuster flotation earlier this year, successfully placed its Starship rocket into orbit for the first time in September. An updated version of its Starlink satellites was deployed as well, underscoring SpaceX's progress toward using its experimental rocket across a variety of applications.
This month, SpaceX has also announced a deal to purchase cellular spectrum licenses from Grain Management, an investment group. Reportedly worth about $8 billion in cash for assets, the move was seen as a push by SpaceX into the wireless market, threatening the hegemony of telecom industry giants like T-Mobile and Verizon.
4. Tesla earnings ahead
Musk's electric car manufacturer Tesla will also report following the close of the U.S. markets on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Tesla unveiled a redesigned Roadster which used SpaceX rocket technology to jump off a ramp and perform a controlled landing. Musk said production of the long-awaited vehicle was set to begin in 2028, over a decade after it displayed a next-generation version of its electric sports car.
The company debuted the model in a live event at SpaceX's McGregor, Texas test facility. The vehicle was able to climb a curved ramp at a controlled pace and jump the ramp at a full inversion before using its air thrusters to correct its orientation and land on all four wheels. Tesla also had the car jump and fly over a set of parked cars and a semitruck.
5. Netflix earnings on tap
Meanwhile, Netflix is due to report after the close on Tuesday.
Last week, the streaming titan reportedly said it planned to slash around 6% of its workforce, or roughly 1,000 roles. The jobs impacted would mostly be in the firm's product, legal, tech and human-resources units, the Wall Street Journal reported.
It was the biggest round of job reductions at the company since 2022. At the end of last year, Netflix employed about 16,000 workers.
The move comes as Netflix is grappling with easing customer engagement after years of strong growth that put intense pressure on traditional cable television businesses. A failed bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming and studio assets earlier this year has also exacerbated concerns around the group's overall strategy.
