Elon Musk, Tesla's chief executive, unveiled the world's first "flying car" on Thursday – an electric sports car that can fly, flip and accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 0.81 seconds.
The redesigned Roadster, developed by Tesla in partnership with SpaceX, can hit a top speed of more than 230mph and is equipped with thrusters. Production is scheduled to begin in 2028.
In a video shared by the Tesla chief on X, a white, futuristic-looking car propels itself into the air, throwing white smoke everywhere as it flips over several stationary vehicles, before landing seamlessly on the ground.
Mr Musk commented: "Turns out the future does have flying cars."
The video was taken at the SpaceX Rocket Development and Testing Facility in McGregor, Texas, as part of a launch event for the car.
Speaking at the event, Mr Musk said: "Flying cars are real… It's got altitude controls, thrusters and main thrusters in the rear. So it can basically fly like a rocket, it can do rolls, crazy gymnastics.
"I should say it's not necessarily a safety optimised car but it takes the fun meter to 11."
At the demonstration, Mr Musk explained that the vehicle had used suction to scale a steep ramp and hang upside down.
The use and legality of such features on public roads were not immediately clear.
The tech billionaire has played down the car's importance to Tesla's finances, describing it in 2023 as a "small potato situation" that would not "move the needle in a major way financially". But the car still carries symbolic weight.
"Tesla does not currently have a halo car, or high-performance luxury vehicle designed to showcase an auto-maker's best engineering and technology. The Roadster will be Tesla's new halo car," Seth Goldstein, a Morningstar analyst, said in a note last month.
Mr Musk and other executives did not specify any target prices at Thursday's event, although Tesla nearly a decade ago quoted a base price of $200,000 (£150,000) for the vehicle.
Tesla's reservation page for the Roadster after Thursday's event showed that a "performance" version of the vehicle would require a $50,000 (£38,000) deposit, and a "thrust" version with "acceleration thrusters" would require a $250,000 (£190,000) deposit.
A "rocket" variant, which Tesla said was "invite only", was described as a single-seat model with a "full flight system".
The reveal of the second-generation Roadster also comes amid a sharp shift in Tesla's focus to AI-led self-driving tech and robotics from manufacturing cars for human drivers.
