James Altucher Says Expert Skepticism Buried Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) And SpaceX Before — Now It’s Targeting Musk’s AI Play

Analyst James Altucher argues that every major Musk venture was loudly declared dead by experts before it became dominant, and he sees the same pattern forming around Musk’s artificial intelligence ambitions.
In a new presentation released through Altucher’s Investment Network, Altucher traces a long history of confident predictions that Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), SpaceX, and Starlink were each destined to collapse.
His argument is not that the critics were simply careless, but that they shared a specific and recurring blind spot: judging Musk’s plans by what existed rather than what was being built.
Altucher cites Investing.com declaring that “Tesla is living on borrowed time,” and MarketWatch predicting the company would be “bankrupt within four months” during what he calls its most vulnerable period.
Rather than collapsing, Tesla went on to become one of the most valuable automakers in the world and, Altucher argues, pulled an entire industry into existence alongside it.
The same pattern played out with SpaceX, where a telecommunications expert predicted the company was “heading on autopilot towards a concrete wall of bankruptcy,” reflecting a broader belief that reusable rockets were a fantasy with no commercial future.
SpaceX instead turned a government-dominated domain into a commercial industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars and now controls a commanding share of global launch capacity.
When Musk extended his ambitions to satellite internet through Starlink, skeptics returned quickly, with CNBC reporting it had “failed to demonstrate it could deliver service” and CNN saying it was “not delivering promised speeds.”
Starlink today operates what Altucher describes as the largest global high-speed satellite network on Earth, again confounding the consensus that had written it off.
“Elon has made a career out of proving the experts wrong,” Altucher says in the presentation, framing the pattern of doubt not as a warning sign but as a reliable tell about where the next opportunity sits.
Altucher’s current focus is on the skepticism now surrounding Musk’s push into artificial intelligence, which he says carries the same hallmarks as the dismissals that once surrounded Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink.
He describes the AI plan as sounding “too big, too strange, too ambitious,” language he notes was used against each of Musk’s previous ventures at the moment they were closest to a breakthrough.
At the center of his analysis sits a single publicly traded company Altucher believes is essential to how Musk executes the AI strategy, though he declines to name it in public materials, calling it the most overlooked part of the entire story.
Altucher, a tech analyst and former Wall Street money manager, has built his reputation on identifying companies at the center of major technological shifts before the broader market catches up.
His presentation is available free and on demand, and walks through the full history of failed predictions before laying out how he would position for what he believes comes next in Musk’s AI push.
