Musk’s Massive Marketing Miss Cost $10 Trillion The most persuasive thing Tesla owns is a 30-minute ride. Tesla (TSLA) has never really offered it to the people who would remember it most: families with kids. In the analysis below we talk about the miss, the opportunity to accelerate the magic, and why $10 trillion may prove to be small. Elon Musk is not just an engineering prodigy. He is a marketing genius. Tesla barely advertises, and it doesn’t need to. Every Tesla buyer knows who built the car. Most of them see Elon in the car they drive. But here’s the thing. Tesla never made the one offer that could have changed its trajectory. A simple offer. Tesla could have made it years ago. It can still make it tomorrow. The offer: - Book a 30-minute Tesla FSD ride in 3 clicks. - Free. - A Tesla rep brings the car to your home. Families with children get something extra. That’s it. That’s the whole marketing plan. Wall Street remains captivated by every new regulatory nod, as we saw when Tesla stock jumped 5% on Monday following European approvals and Barclays upgrade. But individual milestones only matter if regular people actually buy into the software. Why does a ride matter so much? Because Musk told us FSD is everything. Back in 2022 he said solving self-driving is “really the difference between Tesla being worth a lot of money or worth basically zero.” Last week he put it another way: “People are buying FSD with a car attached, not the other way around.” FSD matters. By Musk’s own math, it’s the only thing that matters. For full details, see – How Tesla Blundered, and how it can come back. And now it works. Put aside the regulatory complaints for a minute – we will come back to it. A Tesla on FSD handles a crowded downtown and an interstate on its own, with a person watching. Tesla’s own numbers say cars on FSD go about 6.0 million miles between major collisions. The US average is one every 660,000 miles. That’s roughly nine times better. Those are Tesla’s figures, not an independent audit. But even a skeptic would say it likely drives at least as safely as the average American. So here’s the question. If FSD is the product, how many people have actually felt it? Tesla says 1.74 million FSD subscriptions are active, worldwide. America has 33.6 million families with children under 18. Magic Kingdom, the busiest theme park on earth, saw 17.8 million visits in 2024 (the latest data available). Six Flags parks drew 47.4 million. In How Tesla Blundered, we argued Tesla stopped growing the one number that matters: Teslas on the road. A free ride might be the cheapest way to start growing it again. Not an unbuilt $25,000 car, just a simple, frictionless offer for American families. People line up for an hour to ride a roller coaster that goes in a circle. A car that navigates your family to the grocery store with seamless supervision? That’s a better ride than anything Six Flags offers. And it’s free. Now picture it with a child in the back seat. The car pulls smoothly out of your driveway, guided by the software while a trained rep oversees every move. It stops for a cyclist. It signals. It turns. Your daughter will be amazed. Then she’ll start asking questions. How does it see? How does it know where to go? What if a dog runs out? That’s what this is about. Think Disney. Think Curiosity. Wonder. Inspiration. An FSD experience in your own downtown 5 miles away, beats a trip to Disney 500 miles away. It beats watching a rocket launch on TV, because she’s inside it. Because now children see their parents driving while smiling in traffic. No frustration. No frowns while driving. What’s that worth? And her parents will remember who gave her that. It’s about inspiring the next generation of Americans and ultimately children all over the world. Inspire to innovate. To dream. To create a better future. That leadership is valuable, and it’s way bigger than Musk, or Tesla, or any one company. That’s what makes it worthy! If you own Tesla, you can’t make that post for him. What you can decide is how much of your money waits on it. There are ways to stay in Tesla without letting one stock sink your portfolio. Our partner advisory firm walks through them on a free 30-minute strategy review. Request a free strategy review. Didn’t Tesla already do this? Sort of. That’s what makes it a miss. Last November, Tesla quietly started “Tesla Ride”: a rep brings a Model Y to your door for a 45-minute FSD drive. It’s only in some US areas, you have to live near a Tesla store, you book it on an events page, and the driver has to be 21 or older. Tesla also hands free 30-day FSD trials to people who already own a recent Tesla. And tomorrow, FSD-equipped cars start showing up on Turo, the car-sharing app. Tesla’s own finance chief says customers now walk into stores asking, “Can we get into an FSD drive?” The demand is already there. Tesla built the ride. Then it hid it. Why is there no Musk post telling 200 million followers to book one? No national offer. No three clicks from the home page. Nothing aimed at families. For a man who can move markets with a single post, that’s the miss. Where does $10 trillion come from? Musk’s own targets. Tesla’s board will pay him the top of his new package if Tesla hits an $8.5 trillion market cap alongside a gauntlet of 12 operational hurdles – ranging from fleet deliveries to software scale. Musk has also said Tesla could be worth more than the next five largest companies combined. That was about $14.7 trillion last year. Tesla is worth about $1.5 trillion today. That’s a gap of $7 trillion to $13.2 trillion. Call the middle of it $10 trillion. That’s the size of the bet Musk has asked investors to make on FSD. And here’s the line in the pay package that ties it to the ride: 10 million active FSD subscriptions. Tesla has 1.74 million. It needs 8.3 million more people to try it, like it and pay for it. You don’t get 8 million subscribers from a Super Bowl ad. You get them one ride at a time. You get it when those children talk. They talk to their friends at school, and at play dates. They talk to them about the fact that it’s free. And that their friends can ask their parents to book it for tomorrow! That’s what gets 8 million FSDs. Do the math on the offer. Say 1 in 10 American families with kids books a ride in a year. That’s 3.4 million rides. At $100 a ride for the rep, the car and the charge, it costs $340 million. Tesla has $45.4 billion in cash. That’s less than a penny of every dollar. If just 1 ride in 20 turns into a Tesla, that’s 168,000 cars. Last quarter, Tesla sold 8,295 cars that weren’t a Model 3 or a Model Y. One family ride program could sell 20 times that. Won’t the regulators stop it? They might slow it down. Nobody can stop it. The complaints are real. A year ago, federal safety regulators opened a probe into FSD covering about 2.9 million Teslas, after reports of cars running red lights and driving the wrong way. Tesla has since pushed driverless FSD for owners to the second quarter of 2027, and only inside its robotaxi zones. But Tesla’s robotaxis are already carrying riders with nobody in the driver’s seat in Austin and Dallas, close to 2 million miles so far. FSD is here, whether regulators like it or not. A supervised ride with a Tesla rep, on today’s software, needs no new permission at all. Musk built the car that drives itself. He built the most famous personal brand in business. He just never put the two together, and handed the keys to a kid. Disney sells wonder for $150 a ticket. Tesla could give it away, and sell a car on the way home. The best way to sell FSD is to let people try it before they buy. Investing should work the same way: see the record first. The Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio holds 30 quality companies in equal weight, and $100,000 put into it at its September 2020 launch had grown to more than $205,000 by September 2025. See the HQ Portfolio’s record.
