Why Should Tesla Stock Holders Watch This One Number?
For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].
A holder of Tesla (TSLA) should watch its operating margin, the share of each dollar of sales left as operating profit. That figure fell to 2.6% in fiscal Q3 2026 from a higher level a year earlier. Over the same year, however, Tesla’s gross margin, the part of each sale it keeps after the cost of building what it sells, went up. So if Tesla keeps more from each sale, where is its profit going?
Tesla Is Spending More To Build New Products
Tesla’s profit is going into the cost of running the company, which management calls operating expenses, while it builds products it does not yet sell. Gross margin counts only the cost of making what Tesla sells, but operating margin also subtracts those running costs.
Tesla’s gross margin was 19.6% in fiscal Q3 2026, up from 18.0% a year earlier. On the October 21, 2026 call, management said Tesla is in “a huge investment cycle to set us up for the future” and that operating expenses continue to increase from quarter to quarter. Management expects that rise to continue until Tesla starts selling its new products. So Tesla keeps more of each sale today, and spends more on what it has yet to sell.
How Low Is Tesla’s Margin Against Its Own Past?
Tesla’s operating margin was 3.5% over the twelve months from October 2025 to September 2026. This figure remains far below its peak, though not at its lowest. The margin has fallen in each of the past two years. The latest quarter was better than the June quarter, when the operating margin was 1.4%.
The twelve-month margin peaked at 17.0% in fiscal Q4 2022. Since fiscal Q4 2016, the metric has been lower than the latest twelve-month margin at 14 of the 40 quarter ends.
Tesla plans to spend more even with its margin this thin. Management expects capital spending of about $20 billion in 2026, which it plans to fund mainly from the cash its operations bring in. That is down from the more than $25 billion management expected for 2026 on the July 22, 2026 call. During the quarter, Tesla also secured the ability to borrow up to $30 billion to support the growth in that spending, though it plans no draws in 2026.
What Are Tesla Buyers Paying For?
The current share price likely assumes Tesla will earn far more than it does today. The stock trades at 407 times its earnings over the past twelve months, against 22.6 times for the S&P 500. Some of the recent rise in the shares has also been tied to a possible merger with SpaceX. Both companies have set up special committees of directors to weigh it, and no deal has been signed.
On the call, management gave its reasons for expecting more. It expects Robotaxi, its driverless ride business, to become a significant part of revenue and profitability in 2027, and it said Tesla is almost sold out of its Megapack energy storage for 2027. Both statements are forecasts, not results.
Tesla also holds more cash than debt. The company held $45.2 billion in cash and short-term investments at the end of September 2026, against $16.4 billion of debt. Its cash from operations rose to $18.7 billion over the past twelve months, from $15.7 billion a year earlier.
So a holder should treat the thin margin as a real risk: management has said the spending will continue until the new products sell, and those sales are still forecasts. With more cash than debt, Tesla is not in a crisis. The worry would ease once Robotaxi grows into a significant part of sales and the other new products start selling. Tesla’s operating margin is the number to watch when the company next reports, expected in January 2027.
Does This Mean You Should Act On TSLA?
Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.
There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
