Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is facing another competitive test in China after BYD, Xiaomi and XPeng all posted strong October sales while Tesla's domestic performance remained under pressure.
BYD sold 490,168 new energy vehicles in October, up 11% from a year earlier and 5.7% from September. It marked the company's highest monthly sales total of 2026 and its sixth consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

The international picture was even stronger.
BYD's overseas sales jumped 102.8% to 170,194 vehicles, showing that the Chinese automaker is not only competing with Tesla at home but also expanding aggressively abroad.
Xiaomi and XPeng also posted record or near-record numbers.
Xiaomi delivered more than 50,000 vehicles in October, its highest monthly tally of the year and only the second time it has crossed that level.
XPeng delivered 50,237 vehicles, up 19.6% year over year and 21.8% from September, beating its previous monthly record.
Tesla's picture looks less comfortable.
China Passenger Car Association data cited by TipRanks showed Tesla's retail sales in China fell 11.9% year over year during the first nine months of 2026 to 381,088 vehicles. Globally, Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter, down 2% from a year earlier.
Tesla is increasingly relying on exports from its Shanghai factory to keep utilization high.
From January through August, exports from China rose 115% year over year and accounted for about 51% of Tesla's China wholesale sales.
That strategy helps absorb weaker domestic demand, but it also underlines how much more competitive China's EV market has become.
BYD overtook Tesla as the world's largest EV seller in 2025, delivering 2.26 million vehicles compared with Tesla's 1.64 million.
Investor Takeaway
I think the biggest concern for Tesla is not simply that one Chinese rival is growing.
It is that multiple rivals are gaining scale at the same time.
BYD has the volume, Xiaomi is ramping quickly, and XPeng is setting new delivery records. That makes China a much harder market for Tesla to defend without either new products, lower prices, or stronger differentiation.
The rising export mix from Shanghai is useful because it keeps the factory productive.
But it also suggests Tesla is becoming more dependent on overseas demand to offset weaker domestic sales.
For investors, the key things to watch are China retail sales, Shanghai export mix, pricing, Model Y and Model 3 demand, and whether local rivals continue gaining share into year-end.
Tesla still has enormous scale.
But China is becoming a much less forgiving market.
