The capex cut heard around the world of markets.
Or was it a capex cut to begin with?
Tesla (TSLA) said this week it's cutting its 2026 capex guidance by $5 billion to $20 billion. Just three months ago, the company lifted it by $5 billion to $25 billion. The quick retrench sparked worries in an already nervous market for tech stocks that Tesla's capex cut signaled a slowdown in AI demand.
The thing is… Tesla isn't a hyperscaler! And the cut ties more closely to challenges making Optimus humanoid robots than a less optimistic view on AI from CEO Elon Musk.
"Bears are already calling that the first hyperscaler capex cut, but Tesla has no cloud to sell and no contracted capacity to walk away from. We expect Alphabet (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), and Amazon (AMZN) to confirm the massive capex spending path next week rather than cut it, because the demand underneath keeps showing up in the numbers and monetization is now starting to kick into next gear," Yorkville Ives partner Dan Ives said in a note.
Ives makes a great point, one that warrants a deeper think by the bears trying to grab a firmer hold on the broader market by dumping top tech names.
Thursday was an absolute bloodbath for big tech, with the Nasdaq Composite getting slammed down nearly 2.6% in its worst single-day beatdown since June.
Adding to the perception on what Tesla did, Meta dropped a bombshell in its third quarter results, posting negative free cash flow for the first time since 2012 amid aggressive spending on AI.
The company said it would issue a new tranche of stock to help fuel its AI buildout.
Throw in crude oil spiking above $112 a barrel on geopolitical tensions with Iran, and you have a mini market meltdown like Thursday.
Just don't blame Tesla for it.
Said Ives, "Tesla delivered the opposite of a capex scare: it cut its full-year capex guide, spent well below expectations, and turned an expected cash outflow into positive free cash flow while FSD attach, subscriptions, backlog, and Megapack orders all moved the right way, so the core business is funding the autonomy and robotics build."
