Tesla has lowered its 2026 capital spending forecast. In its Q3 10-Q, the company now says it expects capital expenditures “to be in excess of $20 billion in 2026,” down from the “more than $25 billion” it had guided since April.
The change was in the 10-Q Tesla filed Wednesday, not in the shareholder letter it released the same day. And it lands in a quarter where Tesla reported $1.53 billion of positive free cash flow, a number that depends a lot on timing.
Tesla’s 2026 capex guidance keeps moving
Tesla started 2026 guiding to about $20 billion in capex. In April, it raised that to more than $25 billion, and in July, CFO Vaibhav Taneja reiterated the figure while Elon Musk called 2026 a “massive capex year.”
Now it’s back to “in excess of $20 billion.”
Tesla has spent $13.01 billion so far this year: $2.49 billion in Q1, $5.79 billion in Q2 and $4.73 billion in Q3. Hitting $25 billion would have required about $12 billion in Q4 alone, more than double its biggest quarter. The new floor only requires about $7 billion.
The 10-Q says 2026 spending is “driven by our SI initiatives, including investments in compute infrastructure and data centers,” along with factory ramps and Tesla’s fleet of “company-operated SI-enabled assets.”
There’s a catch in the cash numbers, though. Tesla had $3.67 billion of equipment and construction spending sitting in liabilities at the end of September, meaning it was booked but not yet paid. That’s up from $2.63 billion at the end of June and $1.63 billion a year ago. So Tesla’s actual spending is running ahead of the cash capex it reports.
Where Tesla’s Q3 free cash flow came from
Tesla reported $6.26 billion in operating cash flow and $1.53 billion in free cash flow after capex. Here’s how it got there:
Depreciation and stock compensation are normal add-backs. They reduce profit without using cash.
The working capital line is the one to watch. Without that $2.59 billion, Tesla’s free cash flow would have been about negative $1.06 billion.
Most of it came from bills Tesla hasn’t paid yet. Accounts payable rose $1.92 billion in the quarter and accrued liabilities rose $1.95 billion, including $722 million more in “accrued purchases,” goods Tesla received but hadn’t been invoiced for.
Another $1.26 billion came from deferred revenue, mostly energy storage. Tesla’s energy deferred revenue jumped to $3.30 billion from $2.31 billion. But not all of that is cash. Tesla disclosed that it billed SpaceX $588 million for Megapacks “that have not been delivered,” which SpaceX hadn’t paid at quarter-end. That amount sits in both deferred revenue and accounts receivable, which rose $565 million.
Those gains were partly offset by a $1.82 billion increase in prepaid expenses and other assets, and a small inventory build.
If you also count the $1.03 billion increase in unpaid capex, Tesla’s free cash flow on an “as spent” basis was closer to $500 million.
Tesla’s borrowing plans
The capex cut comes a month after Tesla signed $30 billion of new credit facilities. The 10-Q details them: a $20 billion delayed-draw term loan maturing in 2029, and $10 billion of revolving credit replacing a $5 billion facility. Tesla hadn’t drawn on either at quarter-end, and it had $45.4 billion in cash and investments.
Electrek’s Take
None of this is improper in today’s accounting standards, which we can argue are pretty awful. Paying suppliers later, collecting deposits, and booking capex when it’s incurred are all somewhat normal accounting, and Tesla disclosed them. But they explain why the “$1.5 billion of free cash flow” headline from Wednesday’s results says less about the business than it seems.
Underneath, Tesla made $718 million of operating income, less than its $1.17 billion in stock compensation, and before working capital, it burned cash. The timing items that helped this quarter will reverse when the invoices come due and the Megapacks ship.
The capex cut is the more interesting signal. Six months ago, Tesla was telling investors 2026 would be a massive spending year to build out AI compute, Optimus and Cybercab. Now it’s lowering the target in its 10-Q instead of the shareholder letter, while lining up $30 billion of debt. Either projects are slipping into 2027, or Tesla is spending less to protect its cash. Tesla should say which.
