또한 affordability(구매력)가 여전히 주요 요인으로 작용하고 있습니다.

Yahoo Finance Executive Editor Brian Sozzi takes a look at the biggest stories as the trading day kicks off, weighing in on the latest inflation reading, earnings results from Morgan Stanley (MS) and Bank of America (BAC), and more.
Sozzi also sits down with Meredith Whitney, who famously forecast the 2008 financial crisis, for a conversation about the economy, inflation, and housing.
All right, you guys know, I, I don't like to hide anything from uh you out there. You watch me every day. And so I will tell you this, I'm having a morning, so I don't know exactly what you're gonna get today. I spilled an energy drink on myself right uh at Yahoo Finds HQ at my desk, all over myself, I had to change clothes. This was not my original outfit. So it's been a morning. We've got a lot of bank earnings. It's been a morning. And I think it's about to be a morning for Netflix, the company that I told you about last week, I talked to you about it yesterday. I said the company was about to come out with job cuts and it looks likeIt just did that, at least according to the Wall Street Journal. Netflix is limiting about 6% of its staff, biggest cuts since 2022. The street wanted to see this. Netflix's stock has not done really anything except go down this year because of more competition from Google and a lot of other media players. This is the first step for Netflix in getting its.Cost base under control as its top line is under pressure. What I mentioned yesterday, I want to bring it up again today. I think Netflix has to take this earnings call coming up on Monday a lot more seriously than prior earnings calls. The street wants to hear, I think, a little bit about a potential dividend from Netflix. It would be a first for this company, but a lot of media companies pay one out. Like I said, you might be, I got, I got Wendy's on my desk. I'm going to get more into that and why, and then I just got grease all over my hands. My clothes are gonna be dirty again, but I can't change them because I'm not doing that on air.All right, I'm always amazed by how markets initially view economic data. The data comes out and boom, within a minute, markets think they know everything about what is about to happen for companies in the economy. It drives me up the wall, even more so than I'm up the wall right now on this busy morning. A great example is today's Consumer Price Index report. Overall inflation for September rose at 3.7%, a quicker pace than the 3.4% pace in August. That'll set off a little bit of an alarm bell for me. Core prices advanced 2.6% faster than a 2.4% increase in August. Immediately, stocks paired gains, and next erupted with talk of more Fed rate hikes.Well, news flash, this information isn't new. The Federal Reserve signaled back in September it may not be done hiking rates this year. What's more, energy prices are still elevated. So of course the CPI is going to come in hotter than people expected. I mean, come on, put 2 and 2 together. None of this is new information. Many of the markets have simply chosen to ignore the economic realities. How you find alpha in markets is finding new information, like what I heard from the Goldman Sachs team today.Economists there think AI-driven inflation is near a peak in part because memory chip prices may come down in 2027. That wouldn't be great news for Micron and Sandisk. These stocks you totally love, you love playing memory chip names, but it would be good news for the economy and a lot of other companies, just not Micron and Sandisk. So, uh, again, I'm having a morning and the morning started again like it did yesterday with uh with bank earnings.AndUh,I didn't like this Bank of America report at all.I think it wasOutright ugly. It wasn't good at all. Another big bank, JP Morgan, missed yesterday on earnings. Bank of America. We're talking about Bank of America, missing on earnings? I mean that's just not good. Now the weakness coming from the stock trading business that maybe came in a little bit weaker than the street liked to see, uh, not good, not good for Bank of America on your earnings day. And it's another big bank where I came away thinking. This company needs to get, I think, costs more under control. Bank of America shares, really, I mean this is a startling decline for a company of the stature of Bank of America. The trading business wasn't exactly that great. I didn't come away thinking Bank of America is really crushing in on all things IPOs.Deals and this is tough for me to say because I'm a fan of Bank of America CEO Brian Moynahan. I think he's done a heck of a job for a long period of time, one of the longest serving bank CEOs in the game. He's done a lot of good jobs, a lot of good things, especially on the digital front, but this is not going to sit well. This is not going to sit well with BFA investors. This is a starting decline for Bank of America, and it tells you that perhaps they're really far behind a lot of its key competitors, whether it's JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, crush it when they report earnings. You just got the sense that Bank of America is a few steps behind some of the leading players, just not, I would say this though, they are ahead of Wells Fargo because Wells Fargo is.It's Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo is out there, but they're still underperforming. But this is not good for Bank of America. One company that is crushing it is Morgan Stanley, also out with results this morning. Key player I played a key role in the SpaceX IPO. Their stock trading business, strong wealth management business, strong. Shout out Morgan Stanley, CEO Ted Pick. He has been getting it done really since he got this job officially more than I think it's almost 2 years ago for Ted.But you're coming away thinking Morgan Stanley doing very, very well, uh, Goldman Sachs doing very, very well, and then you have like the money center banks like a JPMorgan and Bank of America, probably not as great a third quarter as a lot of the execs wanted to see over there. Uh, and I think the team over at Evercore ISI to wrap this all on a boat, two new things here, and I was inspired by the note. JPMorgan Bank are missing earnings. Hate to see two banks miss, especially of the stature. And like I mentioned, I really didn't like this BFA quarter, and you got the sense thatBanking isn't falling off a cliff by any means. The economy is doing well. It just may not have lived up to market expectations for a lot of these banks coming out of the quarter. We saw a little slowdown in the deal pipeline, uh, and that is the reason why these results weren't exactly super, super awesome. And then, you know, to kick off my day, we got a little tweet from Elon Musk.On micron. And I love this one from Elon. Yeah, cause I learned a new term. The new term on X apparently is, uh, they're calling this a bull trade. Elon Musk is bull trading micron. You learn something new every day. Let's show the message up there. You can see the Elon Musk post here early on. Micron has been reasonable regarding future memory prices, while others have been extortionate. That's been tough talk from Elon, which is something today's customers won't forget. Micron is making the smart move for long-term customer loyalty.I saw that from Elon and I'm thinking wow, Micron is giving them some sweetheart deals, which I would be surprised. That's why you're seeing this reflected in the stock price. Perhaps Micron because Elon is Elon, Elon is SpaceX, Elon has Tesla, Elon is boring Company. They use a lot of chips and whatever Elon is working on. Perhaps Micron is not charging as much to Elon and his companies as other companies they're charging, so maybe they're not.Making as much money as they theoretically could given the memory chip shortage, whatever it is, that is a win for Elon Musk. That is a win for his companies. Perhaps not just a big win for Micron, but something to watch going forward because it fits in what I heard from Goldman Sachs. I'll have more to say about this in a second. Goldman Sachs saying memory chip prices, that chip supply growth or the chip pricing growth may slow down next year and we may already be at a peak, something to watch moving forward. And it's been a busy morning. I told you I've had a lot going on. I haven't had a chance to do my my grip strengthener. It's just, it's been a lot. Earnings days, there's always so much going on in your earnings days, always so many nuggets, but you can't keep just focused on earnings. You have to realize what's happening out there in the world of companies. And this note from Jeffrey's.On Wendy's, you know, a target of mine, I think the company is doing absolutely awful. 6 quarters of same store sales declines for Wendy's, losing massive market share to a lot of companies. Jeffrey's saying more store closures for Wendy's may be on the way, and I think this is a problem for Wendy's because they came out about 3 months ago and the new CEO Bob Wright said they were.Going to close more stores. Jeffrey's is suggesting those numbers might be even more than many analysts on the street and many investors even think. Wendy's is really struggling, especially when you see news of their major franchisee a couple of weeks ago filing for bankruptcy. They'll probably close more stores too. But you know it's one thing to close stores. You have to remember at the core of a fast food restaurant is operations and food. Now I'm going to start with the food here. I ordered these Wendy's items at my local Wendy's. I ordered the Baconator. And the website shows a picture of a bacon editor that's the size of my head. This is the baconator.Greasy, greasy as hell. I ordered a croissant off my Wendy's page. This is it. This is it. I mean, see, uh, 000, doesn't look anything like the photo. And a couple of things here. Wendy's food quality has to improve. That's number 1. You can close all the restaurants you want. The thing is, you're still gonna have restaurants open, over 5000 probably, in the United States. The food has to be good.Number 2, why is Wendy's still even selling breakfast? This was an initiative rolled out by the prior CEO. It's failed miserably. I think Bob Wright has to go back to not selling breakfast at Wendy's.They shouldn't even be in the breakfast game. It's a McDonald's-led breakfast environment for Wendy's, and if you wants to improve operations, you got to take this this breakfast stuff off the menu. I mean, it smells good, it's a little greasy. That's not my jam. It's not my jam. And last but not least is what has happened because Wendy's has done so bad. I think a lot of French.have gotten disenchanted with the concept, and they're not investing. I can't get this grease off my hands. This is ridiculous. They have not invested to keep their stores relevant and fresh. A couple of photos from the Wendy's that I just went to that I shared with the team, and you can see a couple of photos here. You have soda machines at Wendy's.That you can't get soda from. I mean, they're, they're crossed up. You got Wendy's trying to sell Crispo, crispy panko fish. You're not the fish filet. I mean, they're the broken machines. And then show me the photo of Dave Thomas.Dave Thomas founded this company in 1969 on fresh beef, and being a champion of fresh beef, founded in 1969, he's just a guy on a wall.Like Colonel Sanders, I think Bob Wright has to get back to the founding mission of Dave Thomas and make him relevant in every single restaurant and re-engage with franchisees to the point where they're investing in their restaurants. What you didn't see here, a lot of the digital menu screens weren't even working right in Wendy's. That's not good. So again, you can close all the restaurants you want to improve your bottom line. The core health of Wendy's is not going to improve until the food gets better and the operations improve. And look, Wendy's is $6 stock right now, and you can look at the valuation metrics for Wendy's on AlphaSpace, and it's a company trading at massive discounts to many of its competitors, and they are deserved, I should say.Stock some housing.Outside of uh my views on fast food, the reality is the, the.The housing market is still frozen. I want to bring in Meredith Whitney, Meredith Whitney Advisory Group CEO joins me now. Meredith, good to see you. It has been a while. When, when does this housing market in the US unfreeze?
I don't think for some, some time. So data came out today, um, from Reddit that said they're the most sellers on the market since, um, uh, since 2000. So what the data came out yesterday and said that was that housing, um, existing home sales, uh, tracked 3.99 million. In, uh, for last month, but, uh, the prior month was revised down. So what it means is that, uh, 2026 is on track to be the worst existing home sale market on record. Um, and that obviously is going to play into consumer confidence. Um, it's not affordability continues to be a factor. So the qualifying income is just slightly under the median income of US households, but the fact is the median is skewed by high-end, and most households cannot afford to get into a mortgage to pay and make a down payment and can't afford to buy an existing existing home.
If you had to build a plan to jumpstart the US housing market, Meredith, what would that plan be?
Uh, build more housing, build more housing, affordable housing, which a lot of that is going to be manufactured housing, um, which from a price point standpoint is, is, you know, 30, 40%, uh, uh, cheaper than stick-built housing. And manufactured housing is really nice now. So you need the land, you can get states and local governments to sponsor the land to make it cheaper than for builders and then the, the.Costs that would improve the situation greatly. Employers are, are starting to get involved with this too, because they need affordable housing for their workforce, and it's very hard to find skilled labor, increasingly hard to find skilled labor in this country. And so I think you're going to see more employers get into the real estate business, and that's a positive.
Why aren't the likes of a Lennar, a KB Home, whoever the home builder is, why aren't they building more homes?
Uh, because, uh, it's like the, the homes that are selling, that they're building are the high-end homes. And also home construction costs have gone, um, uh, gone up dramatically. So, when you talk about CPI, you talk about all the things that go into building a house, that's all gone, gone up. So the only margins that they make are on high-end, you know, the Toll brother type of, of.Homes and so the margins are just squeaky thin on the other homes that, you know, you've got to get, I think you've got to get more government involvement, which the Affordable housing bill, the 20th century Affordable housing bill promotes. It just takes, it just takes time. One
more rate hike from the Fed this year, does that put the housing market from a freeze into a deep freeze?
It doesn't help. You know, the housing market is bad enough anyway. It certainly doesn't help. You know, I think that, um, higher rates, and this is something that the banks talked about a lot, like how much does that slow the economy. It helps, you know, some of the banks in terms of net interest margin to varying degrees. Wells Fargo didn't have a lot of upside with its net interest margin, surprisingly, I think that's why it disappointed. But you know, it's, it's a question of how much is good enough for the banks to benefit, how much is bad enough then for valuations of so many of the private credit assets that then come back to impact the banks. It has a positive and negative, and what is the elasticity of how much is positive and how much more is negative. And I think that's the real question with this earnings, earnings season.
I, I read the story on the train home yesterday, Meredith. I want to get your thoughts on this because the headline was this. Nearly 50% of adults under 30 live with their parents. The financial fallout could last for decades, and then underneath it says, childhood homes are the new first apartment.
Yeah, this has been a trend for the last few years, and I found it shocking. So you, you focus on the under 30, but what's also telling is the fact that, um, men between, between 35 and 54 are increasingly moving back with their parents. So, uh, there was another data point that the marriage rate is, uh,At a historic low. Um, uh, uh, now, you know, men are, are, are, are single men are moving back with their, with their, with their parents. And that's not a big economic, uh, uh, contributor. And I think that's something that's troubling. It's one thing for under 30 to save money and, and get a, uh, you know, get it, save up for a down payment. For it to be a temporary issue, but the more troubling trend is older men moving back in with their parents or their, their single mother moving into the basement.
Yeah, I, I have thoughts on that, but we're gonna take that offline, not.
I'm sure you get a lot of emails from thoseguys.
As one would say, that's a no comment. Uh, that's a no comment. But the other way to look at this, nearly half of adults under 30 live with their parents, but that half may never own a home, right?
Well, it's increasingly very difficult for young people to own homes, but I question whether the law, that the American dream has changed so that the big gains in home ownership may be behind us as far as young people are concerned, and they may see the opportunity cost of putting a down payment on a home as as.Less than investing in the market, so you see more young people trading their own, you know, portfolio and being much more active traders trying to get, get rich so they can retire.
I love that point. Hold one second. I love that point, and you are so on the market. Isn't the new American dream to build an amazing stock portfolio and you don't have to worry about paying a landscaper 100 bucks a week to cut your lawn?
Yeah. And it's, it's, it's money that, so the down payment may may be money that has a return 2030 years from now, but they want to, um, uh, earn a lot and retire early. It's a, it's a lifestyle generation. And they, you know, and frankly, they've.Right for the last 3 years. They've made more in the stock market than they have on, they would have on home appreciation. And renting is a lot more flexible. So, uh, you look at, I think a trend, a longer term trend for the people who are going to be, to live on their own, they'll be renters.
You know, the other story that I came across, buying a home has gotten harder for young adults in most US metro areas. I mean, the prices for homes in metro areas have gone through the roof, especially if you look at San Francisco because of the AI boom.
Yeah, for the metro area, I mean, look, let's look at, at New York for example, um, rents are so high because there's so much inventory off the market for issues of rent, uh, uh, rent, uh, rent control. Um, there's just not enough inventory. And, um, from a San Francisco perspective.San Francisco has had this massive economic revival with AI and that pushes more people, uh, more, more younger people out of the market. But again, um, uh, they're, they're, you know, the, the rental revival, um, is a real thing with young people.
On the, on the young people topic, Meredith, what would you tell the folk, you know, that, that sub 30 year old right now that, that wants to own a home? What could they do? What steps can they be taking today to eventually own a home?
Well, one thing that's going on within the housing market is you're seeing, and this is also with the, uh, 20th century, uh, uh, housing bill that passed last, uh, just, just several months ago, um, is you're going into blighted areas, um, and, uh, investing in rehabilitation of those homes. And that's actually a much cheaper way of owning a home.Um, than, than otherwise. So if you can have a, you know, Detroit's the, the, the perfect example of this, where you had an economic revival, um, uh, uh, with blighted areas, with rundown areas, um, and investment in those areas, you can get, uh, a home for, you know, a massive discount, um, to what you would.Have in the more established areas and these areas are getting, you know, also economic investment from, from corporations and you're seeing real revival. I mean that's that's a, that's a really great story in terms of what's going on with the real estate market. It's small and it's spotty, but it's happening.
Meredith, it almost reminds me of.You know, watching Little House on the Prairie when Pie Ingles went out there, he staked his claim and he built his own home, like we're going back. I mean, in order to, to own a home, we might have to go to these areas where not a lot of people live, buy the home at, you know, $50,000 and, and rebuild it ourselves.
Yeah, but think about the economic, um, then you see real, a real home price potential appreciation where you necessarily don't see it in other areas. So, um, from a speculative, young people are supposed to be, um, you know, risk takers. That would make a lot of sense. And there are, there's still urban areas, so they're still where they want to be. Young people want to be in urban areas. This is just a different take on it.
Meredith, always good to see you. Please do come in person soon. I hope to see you. Hope to see you in person. Absolutely, thanks so much. All right, Tesla's Roadster event, uh, set for Thursday, uh, is going to be an interesting one, because it's a Tesla Roadster and it could be pretty cool. It's unclear exactly what this thing, uh, what this thing looks like. Uh, but that got me thinking aboutSpaceX, again, you see the natural tie-in. I mean, all these things, Tesla, SpaceX, there might be a merger at some point. And I caught this good interview by Ron Barron. He did, did a new interview, it just dropped, Columbia Business School, and he put a, I mean, a mind-blowing evaluation on what SpaceX may be worth at some point. Now keep in mind though, Barron has been a long-term bull on Tesla, Musk, and his various businesses.
In 10 years, I think it's gonna be thousands of dollars a share. I think it'll be worth $20 trillion.30 trillion dollars, uh, $50 trillion. Uh, Elon thinks I'm way low, uh, and it's now, now $2 trillion. So, uh, and there's a good uh the fundamentals, and this is not pulling numbers out of the air. I think that, uh, Starlink alone in, uh, in, in the next 10 years is going to be worth somewhere around.Um, you know, uh, $14 trillion.14 $15 trillion and it's still at the very early stages of that growth. And then the data centers in space, man, that's unbelievable. You can't build them on the planet anymore, and uh how large that business is gonna be, it's gonna be multiple of, uh, of, of how big uh Starlink is gonna be. We can talk about the fundamentals there later, but, but the idea is that I'm thinking we're gonna make at least 20 or 30 times.
All right. Uh, I just wanted you guys to keep in mind, one, this Wendy's sandwich is actually pretty tasty. But #2.SpaceXX market cap is about $2 trillion right now. So, you have the SpaceX current market cap, $2 trillion.Ron Barron's at potentially 50 trillion. A lot of things have to go right. For SpaceX, like, a lot. Like Starlink needs to crush AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. He needs to put them in the ground. That reusable rocket has to happen and probably like 30 other things that I'm not thinking about right now because I'm still thinking about how I do not like that Bank of America quarter. So I appreciate Ron Baron's insight. Always enjoy listening to him, but keep in mind, just put some context around these things, you know, SpaceX, $2 trillion Ron Barron sees $50 trillion. So that's like a huge gap.All right, staying on tech just a little bit here. AI models are only getting smarter, and that means the investing game could be about to change in very big ways, at least that's what the new warning from Deutsche Bank strategist Adrian Cox told me. Here's what Cox says to set this up for you. Under our scenario.By 2030, the best performing AI models would have the qualities of super intelligence that is better than human experts in all domains. These would be frontier models, and using them would feel exactly like bringing the best human experts in a room to solve whatever business problem you face. Whether you want to embrace super intelligence or AI, whatever you want to call it or not, that's not the point of this callout. The point is how you invest is on.The cusp of changing radically because markets will only be getting faster and more intelligent. That is going to require you to rethink how you invest, full stop. Here are the three changes Cox sees coming. I think all of them make a lot of sense. First, you may not be able to successfully just set and forget your money, say, by putting it in ETFs that track the major averages. You will have to be more granular and find clear winners and losers from the AI movement.Second is that you may no longer be able to think calm price action in the markets means low risk. The reality is new investing models will level the playing field, meaning many similar strategies being used that essentially suggests the market will not be prepared for negative surprises out of companies or on the economy. And last but not least, averaging down or scooping up shares whose price has fallen may no longer be a great idea, says Cox. A falling price may be information that a business model is obsolete rather than an opportunity. Always embrace change as an investor. It is your best friend, and so am I. Stay unleashed.
